This series consists of subject index cards created by the Import Licensing Branch of Customs and Excise, Office of the Collector of Customs, Victoria. The cards are of two sizes: For the period 1946-1958 there are yellow cards 11" x 5" giving subject heading, year, registration number, date of receipt of letter, from whom received, and subject of letter. For the period 1959-1963 there are white cards 8" x 5" giving subject heading, year, date, writer, subject, and file number. It appears that the procedure in the Import Licensing Branch was to record incoming correspondence in the file movement registers (MP720/3) and then cross-reference the subject in these index cards. These records were transferred into archival custody through the Correspondence, Records and Typing Section of the Office of the Collector of Customs, Victoria. They were in use in connection with the system of import licensing controls. This system was almost completely abolished as from 23rd Feb. 1960. "The remaining import licensing controls were removed on 18th Oct. 1962, with the exception of goods retained under control for reasons associated with the protection of the Australian industries concerned".
