Series note |
This series comprises individual case files and policy files dealing with matters within the areas of interest to the Department. The subject matter includes applications for assisted passage, passports and naturalization; deportation orders; and related policy material.
A random selection of policy files dealt with the following subjects:
Monthly progress report and statistical return for Italy;
Parkes - Equipment;
British Assisted Migrants - Air Flight Jan 1959;
Condobolin 'Bring out a Briton' Committees Request for Labour;
List of Applicants for Naturalization approved by the Minister;
Roma ex Europe 1959;
KLM Flights ex Schipol January - March 1959.
Between 1953 and 1955, two categories of files existed - European and non-European, which were each allocated a block of numbers, eg. European Category 1 - 60,000. In 1955, policy files were added with block allocation of numbers. On occasions when block allocations were exceeded a further allocation of numbers was needed.
In 1974, the European and Non-European categories of files were abolished, with all personal files being placed under the one category 'Personal with block allocation of number by alphabetical grouping' being retained. However, this was abandoned in January 1977 with all personal files coming under the one block allocation.
A brief description of records held in this series is as follows;
1. Immigration case files containing:
Migration applications;
Citizenship applications;
Temporary entry and visitor applications;
Criminal deportation; and
FOI applications.
2. General administrative files containing:
Policy matters;
Legal matters;
Assurances of support;
Maintenance guarantees (files containing Assurance of supports
and Maintenance guarantees 1979 to 1988 where transferred to
the Department of Social Security in August 1988);
Indo-Chinese refugee selection documents;
Admission of staff;
Nominal rolls;
Appeals;
Settlement and community welfare; and
Investigation activities.
3. Immigration case files classified as confidential.
4. General administrative files classified as confidential.
The covers of those files examined are printed with Department of Immigration [Central Office] and below this title is the 'subject'. The file number is printed in both the top and bottom right hand corners. The remainder of the file is divided into six columns, allowing for (twice over) folio no., referred to and date, clearing officers initials and date. The files have a distinctive band that extends from the top to the bottom on either the left or right hand side. This band may be yellow, green, purple, blue, brown, black, red or grey.
The series CRS A8354, 'Establishment files with an 'O' prefix' was terminated in 1988 and its files were incorporated into A446.
The Department of Education, Employment and Training (CA 5986) control the portion relating to migrant education contained in this series.
