Summary heading

Function and purpose

This register records the details of badges allocated to personnel who served in the Royal Australian Navy (RAN) during World War I. Returned Sailor’s badges were issued to members of the RAN who had been on active service afloat.

Typically the Returned Sailors badges contain columns for the following information, which is entered where applicable:

-        Name

-        Returned Sailor’s badge (records number allocated)

-        Home Service badge (records number allocated)

-        Royal Navy (records number allocated)

The address of the applicant is also often recorded alongside the record of badges received.

Using the series

The entries within these registers are arranged alphabetically by surname. Within each letter it appears that lists are arranged in order that requests were received and badges subsequently allocated.

Physical characteristics

The register is a bound volumes of approximately foolscap size. The front cover and some early pages have become detached from the rest of the volume, and so will need preservation attention prior to being issued to the Reading Room.

System of arrangement and control

The entries within these registers are arranged alphabetically by surname. Within each letter it appears that lists are arranged in order that requests were received and badges subsequently allocated.

Upon transfer in August 2006 this series consists of only this volume. A single number system of control was imposed by the NAA upon transfer from the Agency in August 2006

Relationships with other records

The register is related to WWI military personnel dossiers in the following series:

A6769 – Service cards for Navy Officers, 1911-1970

A6770 – Service cards for Petty Officers and Men, 1911-1970

The cards record the allocation of badges.

The register is also related to A13289 - Registers of Badges awarded to World War II Service personnel, Mothers and Widows, and Female Relatives and Exemption badges, and was originally transferred by the Agency as part of a single series.
