Professor Hills was born in Melbourne, Victoria on 31 Aug 1906. He was educated at University High School, and the Universities of Melbourne, London and Dunelm.
Hills was first appointed to the Chair of Geology and Mineralogy at Melbourne University in April 1944, and retained this until April 1962. From April 1962 to 1971 he was Deputy Vice-Chancellor and from November 1963 to 1971 he was Research Professor in Geology - both at the University of Melbourne. During the Second World War Professor Hills was commissioned by the Australian Government to undertake the construction of a giant relief model of Australia. The war years saw the construction of the northern section of Australia, and the project was continued until about 1955 when the whole of the Australian mainland and Tasmania were completed.
At the end of 1971 Professor Hills retired from the University and from then until the present he became Emeritus Professor
of Research in Geology. Also from 1972 he is listed on the
University's Teaching and Research Staff as Honorary Research Professor in Geology.
Professor Hills is a trustee of the National Museum of Victoria and of the Royal Society of Victoria. His publications include: Outlines of Structural Geology, Physiography of Victoria, Elements of Structural Geology, Arid Lands (ed.), and numerous research papers.
