Screen Australia was established under the Screen Australia Act 2008 (Department of the Environment, Water Heritage and the Arts) and commenced operation on the 1st of July 2008, bringing together the functions of the Film Finance Corporation (FFC), Film Australia, and the Australian Film Commission (AFC).
Functions and activities
Screen Australia is a Commonwealth authority and statutory agency responsible for engaging audiences and a creative, innovative and commercially sustainable screen industry through the development, funding, promotion and facilitation of access to Australian screen product, which support and promote the development of screen culture in Australia. Screen Australia operates under the Screen Australia Act 2008 to enable creative individuals and businesses, through financial and other assistance, to make high quality film, television and other screen programs and for these programs to attract Australian audiences and international markets. The organisation aims to develop, produce, promote, distribute and provide assess to diverse Australian programs, and support the development of the Australian screen production industry, so that Australian screen content is accessible nationally and internationally.
Screen Australia programs include:
- Financing and co-financing of film and television production;
- Financing film, television and interactive media project development;
- Financing the professional development of practitioners through the production of feature films, documentaries, animation, short drama and digital interactive media;
- Resourcing the development of indigenous film, television, and digital interactive program makers;
- Resourcing activities and events which play a development role in the film, television and interactive media sector;
- Resourcing screen content creators and interactive media producers to engage with the global marketplace;
- Commissioning, producing and promotion of a slate of documentary production;
- Providing services facilities for the independent production sector.

Screen Australia maintains offices in Sydney (head office), Melbourne and Brisbane. The Screen Australia Studios are located in Lindfield NSW at the former Film Australia site.

On 14 December 2011 the former Department of Regional Australia, Regional Development and Local Government moved from the Prime Minister’s portfolio to become a standalone portfolio agency, the Department of Regional Australia, Local Government, Arts and Sport. Responsibility for arts and sport, including 15 related agencies, transferred from the Prime Minister and Cabinet (PM&C) portfolio to the new portfolio.
