The Australian Wool Board [I] was constituted under the Wool Publicity and Research Act 1936, assented to on 28 May 1936.
The members of the Board were appointed by the Governor-General in Council as from 9 July 1936, they were:
J F Guthrie (representing the Commonwealth Government)
J P Abbott, S E N Bourke, D T Boyd, A E Hamilton, G D Kelly
(chairman) and W L Sanderson (members nominated by the Australian
Woolgrowers' Council).
The first meeting of the Australian Wool Board was held in July 1936.
As defined by the Wool Publicity and Research Act, the powers of the Board were broad directives to make arrangements for improving wool production, and increasing publicity and research. It also administered the Wool Publicity and Research Fund which provided the money for its operation from revenue received under the Wool Tax Act 1936.
One of the most important tasks for the Board in its early years was the creation of the International Wool Secretariat in 1937 to aid research and promotion of wool throughout the World. Initially the countries involved were Australia, South Africa, and New Zealand although its activities were expanded later on.
The Wool Use Promotion Act 1945 repealed the Wool Publicity and Research Act 1936 and established a new Australian Wool Board, (CA 2267) which took over the functions of the old.Historical agency address
