The Division of Animal Genetics was previously known as the Animal Genetics Section which was established in 1951 within the Division of Animal Health and Production. It was accorded divisional status on 23 November 1959. In November 1975 the Division was combined with the Division of Animal Physiology to form the Division of Animal Production.
Most of the Division was located at Delhi Road, North Ryde. However, some staff were located elsewhere. For example, Helen Newton Turner and her staff were at the F D McMaster Laboratory in the grounds of the University of Sydney.
