The CSIRO Institute of Animal Production and Processing was formed to carry out research and development to increase the productivity of Australia's livestock industries within sustainable production systems, to improve the quality and marketability of animal products, and to develop new value-added products and processes. Generic research for the food industry and research into human nutrition for the benefit of the Australian community also formed part of the Institute's program.
The main commodities for which research was undertaken were wool, beef, sheep meats and dairy products. Research covered many areas from pastures through animal health, production and harvesting, to processing and products, including by-products. For chicken meat and egg production, research was mainly in poultry breeding and health. The Institute worked in close collaboration with rural and manufacturing industries, and with State Departments and Universities to achieve effective integration of the national research effort.
