The Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) Division of Fisheries Research was created following a decision in early 1980 by the CSIRO Chief Executive to split the former Division of Fisheries and Oceanography and relocate the two subsequent Divisions from Cronulla to Hobart. The Division incorporated Fisheries Resources, Prawn Biology, Phytoplankton Production, Coastal Ecology and Biological Oceanography Sections, playing a vital role in many areas of research both internal and on projects linked to other organisations at state, national and international level.
The Division formed part of the CSIRO Institute of Animal and Food Sciences and continued to operate until December 1987 when, following the creation of the Institue of Natural Resources and Environment, the Division of Fisheries was established.
