The Department of Transport [V] was established on 23 December 1993 pursuant to Executive Council Minute No. 21 of that date (Commonwealth of Australia Gazette, No. GN1, 12 January 1994) when the Department of Transport and Communications (CA 5992) was abolished and its functions shared with the Department of Communications [II]
(CA 7852).

The Department was abolished on 11 March 1996 pursuant to the Administrative Arrangements Order of that date. It was replaced by the new Department of Transport and Regional Development (CA 8248).
