The Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) was established in 1949. Amongst other things the CSIRO is responsible for the initiation and carrying out of scientific research and investigations in connection with, or for the promotion of, primary or secondary industries in the Commonwealth or Territories of the Commonwealth or in connection with any other matter referred to the Organisation by the Minister.
The Division of Fisheries and Oceanography was responsible for fisheries and oceanographic research and investigations.
