The Institute of Plant Production and Processing (IPPP) was established in January 1988 and is the main body in Australia which undertakes long-term research for the plant-based industries, especially in the development of new technologies and products and where problems or opportunties are at a national level or cross state boundaries. Its research complements that of universities, State Departments of Agriculture and commercial organisations. The Institute interacts with and overlaps the more fundamental role of universities and the more applied role of state departments.
The Institute's principal objectives are to:
. Generate scientific innovation for future industry benefit
. Enhance efficiency, competitiveness and growth of Australia's
plant and pasture based industries by:
(a) improving product quality, specification, packaging and
storage to meet market needs and preferences;
(b) diversifying into products with good market potential;
(c) adding value through processing in ways that will benefit
Australia;
(d) increasing production efficiency in sustainable agricultural
systems.
. Improve knowledge of Australian plants, insects and soils
. Achieve effective technology transfer and communication to
industry
. Ensure adequate research resources are available to achieve the
Institute's objectives
. Promote effective organisation and management of research.
The Institute is comprised of seven divisions as follows:
1. Division of Entomology
2. Division of Forest Products
3. Division of Forestry
4. Division of Horticulture
5. Division of Plant Industry
6. Division of Soils
7. Division of Tropical Crops and Pastures
The IPPP appears to have inherited its functions from the Institute of Biological Resources (no longer in existence) which had the responsiblity for functions including entomology, forest research, horticultural research, plant industry, soils and tropical crops and pastures.
The Director of the IPPP as at December 1993 was Dr John Radcliffe OAM.
