On 10 November 1975 the Division of Animal Production was created from the amalagamation of groups within the Division of Animal Genetics and the Division of Animal Physiology. The Division's aim was to assist the animal industries by providing new and improved technologies offering significant gains in efficiency of livestock production. The Division's research is mainly in the fields of nutrition, reproduction, genetics and livestock management.
Dr T W Scott was appointed the first Chief of the Division.
The laboratory was known as the Ian Clunies Ross Animal Research Laboratory and later as simply the Ian Clunies Ross Laboratory. The Division of Animal Health moved to Prospect from Glebe in December 1994.
As of 1 July 1995, the research and support staff of the Division of Animal Health (CA 4373) located at Prospect (including the McMaster Laboratory) and at Armidale were officially merged into the research programs of the Division of Animal Production.
