An Order-in-Council dated 1 July 1915 established the Australian Survey Corps as part of the Permanent Military Forces. Personnel were transferred from the Royal Australian Engineers - Survey Section, who had been responsible for the mapping programme from 1910. The 'Royal' title was conferred in 1936.
The Royal Australian Survey Corps provides maps and charts to the Australian Defence Force for training and military operations. The Corps also has a commitment to the Defence Co-operation Programme with neighbouring countries.
