The CSIRO Division of Animal Health II was established following a three way split of the Division of Animal Health and Production.
Over the years the Division has operated major laboratories at Armidale, Brisbane, Geelong, Melbourne and Sydney, and had smaller units at a number of other sites and field stations ranging from Townsville to Perth. As from July 1996, its major activities are concentrated at the Australian Animal Health Laboratory at Geelong.
The Division of Animal Health conducts research into the causes, diagnosis, control and eradication of economically important diseases of livestock and the health aspects of animal production in temperate Australia, and to enhance Australia's capability and preparedness to combat exotic livestock disease outbreaks. A broad spectrum of bacterial, viral, parasitic and toxicological diseases is investigated, usually in long-term problem-oriented studies, but shorter-term applied problems are tackled as necessary. In keeping with their importance to the national economy, the sheep and cattle grazing industries receive most emphasis and support, but research for the poultry, pig and dairy industries is also of considerable significance.
