The Division first appeared in the Directory of 1975. The starting date was noted in CSIRO's Historical Directory 1926-1976.
The Division of Chemicals and Polymers was formed in January 1988 to work with defined industry sectors within the Institute of Industrial Technologies. The former Division of Applied Organic Chemistry was combined with the Water and Wastewater Program of the former Division of Chemical and Wood Technology. The new division's aim was to develop new technologies to support the growth in Australia of the chemical, polymer and water/wastewater treatment industries and to make them more competitive in domestic and international markets.
On 1 July 1997, the Division of Chemicals and Polymers changed its name to CSIRO, Division of Molecular Science, Clayton [Victoria].Historical agency address
