The Division of Radiophysics is one of five divisions under the Institute of Information Science and Engineering.
Radiophysics conducts research into communications systems and imaging technologies. The Division has four groups; Solid-state Devices Group; Electromagnetic and Optics Group; Signal and Image Technologies; and the Ultrasonics Group, previously the Ultrasonics Institute, incorporated into the Division in August 1989.
Establishment of the Radiophysics Laboratory (RPL) was approved in August 1939, with temporary accommodation provided in the Department of Electrical Engineering at the University of Sydney pending completion of extensions to the National Standards Laboratory building. CSIRO advises that the RPL was officially established on 29 November 1939. Building commenced on 30 December 1939 and the RPL building was occupied in April 1940. The Laboratory was accorded Divisional status from May 1940. The officer in charge of the RPL, and Chief of the Division from 1940-41 was Dr D.F. Martyn.
The Division of Radiophysics merged with the CSIRO, Division of Applied Physics and was renamed CSIRO, Telecommunications and Industrial Physics on 20 September 1996.
