On 13 December 1984, the Department of Science and Technology (CA 3069) was abolished and the Department of Science [III] (CA 4136) was created by a meeting of the Federal Executive Council (notified in Commonwealth of Australia Gazette, No S520, 13 December 1984). The Department of Science took the science functions of the old
department and the technology function was passed to the new
Department of Industry, Technology and Commerce (CA 4132). The Administrative Arrangements Orders of 13 December 1984 (notified in Commonwealth Gazette, No S521, 13 December 1984) stated that the Department of Science [III] would be responsible for the following principal matters:
. Science policy and research
. Patents of inventions and designs, and trade marks
. Meteorology
. Ionospheric prediction
. Analytical laboratory services
. Weights and measures
. Administration of the Australian Antarctic Territory and the
Territory of Heard Island and the McDonald Islands
. Commission for the Future.
The Administrative Arrangements Orders also stated that the Minister for Science would administer the following legislation:
. Anglo-Australian Telescope Agreement Act 1970
. Antarctic Marine Living Resources Conservation Act 1981
. Antarctic Treaty Act 1960
. Antarctic Treaty (Environment Protection) Act 1980
. Australian Antarctic Territory Acceptance Act 1933

In a media release of 11 December 1984, the Prime Minister announced that Mr Jones would have special responsibility for assisting Senator Button, the Minister for Industry, Technology and Commerce, in regard to Information, (Technology and Biotechnology).
In the Administrative Arrangements Orders of 30 July 1985
(Commonwealth of Australia Gazette, No S320, 1 August 1985) the following changes were made; the Metric Conversion Act 1970 was repealed by the Weights and Measures (National Standards) Amendments Act 1984; the principal matter of civil space program was added and a citation was changed, the Weights and Measures (National Standards) Act 1960 became the National Measurements Act 1960.
In the Administrative Arrangements Orders of 3 February 1987
(Commonwealth of Australia Special Gazette, 3 February 1987) the Mount Stromlo Observatory Act 1956 was repealed by the Statute Law (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act (No 2) 1986. In the same Orders sections 103, 104 and 105 of the Trade Marks Act 1955 went to the Department of Industry, Technology and Commerce (CA 4132).
The Department was abolished on 24 July 1987 (Commonwealth of Australia Gazette No S183, 24 July 1987) and its functions were assumed by the Department of Industry, Technology and Commerce and the super-ministries of Administrative Services [III] (CA 5983); Arts, Sport, the Environment, Tourism and Territories (CA 5984); Employment, Education and Training (CA 5986) and Primary Industries and Energy (CA 5990).
