On 17 November 1976 the Minister for Transport announced that a new body would be formed within the Department of Transport, as a result of the Government's decision to amalgamate the Commonwealth Bureau of Roads and the Bureau of Transport Economics. This new body would adopt the title of Bureau of Transport Economics. The new body was formally established on 30 June 1977 following the passage of the Commonwealth Bureau of Roads (Repeal) Act 1977. The function of the Bureau is to conduct research programs, studies and investigations and reports to the Minister in order to assist in the formulation of policy in the field of transport including matters related to roads and road transport.
Following the administrative change of July 1987 the Bureau was renamed and since approximately 1 January 1988 has been known as the Bureau of Transport and Communications Economics (CA 7487).
