On 1 August 1967 Qantas Empire Airways Limited (CA 985) was renamed Qantas Airways Limited.
The 1981 Commonwealth Government Directory (p355) described Qantas as "a Commonwealth Government company that has the function of developing and operating airline services on behalf of the Government outside the area of the mainland of Australia and Tasmania."
Qantas Airways Limited expanded its operations to include the mainland of Australia and Tasmania when it purchased Australian Airlines on 14 September 1992. Australian Airlines, Head Office
(CA 254) and State Offices, were fully merged with Qantas on
1 November 1993 and commenced operating as Qantas Airways.
However, at this stage Australian Airlines has continued to retain its separate identity as a registered company.
On 21 December 1992 the Qantas Sale Act 1992 was proclaimed, thereby putting into place legislation to facilitate the future privatisation of Qantas Airways.
As a result of this legislation the Minister for Finance, the Hon Ralph Willis, announced that British Airways had purchased a 25% stake in Qantas for $665 million, effective from 10 March 1993.
The Minister also announced on 9 February 1993 that the public float of the Government's remaining 75 per cent interest in Qantas would take place in the latter half of 1993. However, this date was revised with a prospectus issued on 22 June 1995 and the public share offer opened on 3 July 1995. Qantas Airways Limited was listed on the Australian Stock Exchange on 31 July 1995.
