The Department of the Interior [II] was created on 26 April 1939 by Executive Council Meeting No 18 (PM's Minute No 54) (Commonwealth of Australia Gazette, No 25, 26 April 1939) and inherited the functions of the Departments of the Interior [I] (CA 27) and Works [I] (CA 30) which were abolished on that date. The first Administrative Arrangements Order issued after the creation of the Department (Commonwealth of Australia Gazette, No 153, 30 November 1939) listed the following functions as being administered by the Department of the Interior [II]:

In 1941, responsibility for Federal Aid for roads and works was transferred to the Department of Transport [II] (CA 44) and the Meteorology function was transferred to the Department of Air (CA 35) but returned in 1946.

In 1945 the Fire Board was transferred to the Department of Works [II] (CA 50) and in 1946 the Department gained responsibility for the Ionospheric Prediction Service from the Prime Minister's Department (CA 12) and some civil defence functions from the Department of Home Security (CA 43).
During World War II, the sections of the Department of the Interior which were engaged by war-time functions were:
(a) Cartographic Section, Property and Survey Branch
(b) CanberraTechnicalCollege, Civic Branch
(c) Commonwealth Observatory, Mt Stromlo Optical Munitions Annexe
(d) Canberra Services Branch
The Cartographic Section was engaged in the preparation of maps for defence purposes under instruction from the Departments of Army and Air. The CanberraTechnicalCollege was involved in the training of aircraftsmen and munitions workers. The Mt Stromlo Optical Munitions Annexe was established in 1940 for the manufacture, assembly and inspection of optical and mechanical components of Military Optical instruments. The Canberra Services Branch acted as agents for the Liquid Fuel Controller and the Commonwealth Salvage Commissioner.
The following changes were notified in Commonwealth of Australia Gazette, No 52, 14 March 1947. The following Acts were transferred to the Department of Supply and Shipping (CA 47):

On 19 December 1972 the Department of the Interior [II] was abolished and its functions split between nine Departments. Administration of the Australian Capital Territory and JervisBay went to the Department of the CapitalTerritory (CA 1477). Administration of the Northern Territory, Ashmore and CartierIslands and Petroleum Acts insofar as they refer to these islands, went to the Department of the Northern Territory [I] (CA 1484). Welfare activities in the Territory went to the Department of Aboriginal Affairs (CA 1476). Control of the Police forces of the Australian Capital Territory and the Northern Territory went to the Attorney-General's Department (CA 5). The Meteorology function and the Ionospheric Prediction Service were transferred to the Department of Science [I]. The civil defence function went to the Department of Defence [III] (CA 46). Control of government publicity and information went to the Department of the Media (CA 1481). The National Capital Development Commission was transferred to the Department of Urban and Regional Development (CA 1493). All other functions were transferred to the Department of Services and Property (CA 1488).
