The Welfare Branch of the Australian Capital Territory was previously called the Welfare Section of the Australian Capital Territory (CA 2963), although it is doubtful whether there was a change in its name or a change in its function. Only the Commonwealth Government Directories of 1982-1984 specifically mention the Welfare Branch.
The following is a summary of the areas the Welfare Branch was attached to:
1970-1972: A.C.T. Services Division
1973-1977: Housing and Welfare Division
1978-1981: City Manager's Office
1982-1984: Welfare Branch of the Community Services Division
1985: Housing and Welfare Division
1986: Community Services Division
1987: Welfare Services Branch of the A.C.T. Administration
1987-1989: Community Services Division of the A.C.T. Community and
Health Service.
Until 24 July 1987 the Welfare Branch was part of the Departments of the Interior; the Capital Territory; the Territories and Local Government and the of the Territories. On 24 July 1987 with the process of the rationalising and streamlining most of the functions (including welfare) relating to the A.C.T. were bought together in an A.C.T. Administration (Administrative Arrangements Orders of 24 July 1987). Further to the rationalising and streamlining process was the integration of the community services (including welfare)and the health function into the agency of the A.C.T. Community and Health Service (CA 5570).
