In broad terms the function of the Aeronautical Research Laboratories has been to conduct research in the field of aeronautics, with emphasis on aircraft and missile design, so that it can assist the armed services and industry.
The first Chief Superintendent was Mr. L.P. Coombes who previously had been chief of the Division of Aeronatucis of the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research.
On 1 July 1974 a joint statement by the Ministers for Defence and Manufacturing Industry said that control of defence research and development activities within the Department of Manufacturing Industry was transferred to the Department of Defence. The Department of Manufacturing Industry was to continue to provide administrative support to the establishments, and appears to have done so until late 1974.
As from April 1994, Materials Research Laboratory (CA 2557) and Aeronautical Research Laboratory almalgamated to form the Aeronautical and Maritime Research Laboratory - Defence Science and Technology Organisation (DSTO) (CA 7873). Even though the name has changed both laboratories will remain at their present locations; MRL in Maribynong and ARL at Fishermens Bend. Former ARL premises will be Head Office.
