Under the terms of the Wool Use Promotion Act, the name of the Australian Wool Board (CA 2267) was changed to the Australian Wool Bureau. As in the Board the membership was again limited to the Commonwealth Wool Adviser and six woolgrower members, three nominated by the Australian Woolgrowers' and Graziers' Council and three by the Australian Wool and Meat Producers Federation. The Bureau had the right to appoint a Chairman which was not subject to Ministerial approval.
The members of the Bureau appointed by the Governor-General
on 1 July 1953 were:
A J M Bride, W A Gunn and J G Carter (nominated by the Australian
Woolgrowers' Council), and
C B Ball, J E Humphreys and J C Gorman (nominated by the Australian
Wool and Meat Producers' Federation) (Commonwealth of Australia
Gazette, No 44, 9 July 1953, p 1917).
However, the Act specifically excluded the Bureau from any
powers related to research except as directed by the Minister. There was a general official attitude that the Bureau had to be disassociated from any marketing functions. However, it was given responsibilities elsewhere, for example, assuming ownership of wool stores formerly administered by the Australian Wool Realisation Commission (CA 256), and also control of the Wool Statistical Service.
The Bureau ceased to function with the proclamation of the
Wool Industry Act 1962 Part II which replaced it by the Australian Wool Board [III] (CA 865) on 1 May 1963 (Commonwealth of Australia Gazette, No.38, 26 Apr. 1963, p.1493)Historical agency address
