On 27 March 1975, an Executive Council Minute (No 33) (Prime Minister and Cabinet No 16) (Australian Government Gazette, No S59) announced the alteration in name of the Department of Customs and Excise (CA 62), to the Department of Police and Customs.
The new Department retained all the Acts previously administered by Customs and Excise and in addition was given administration of the function of Police forces of the Northern Territory of Australia, the Australian Capital Territory and Norfolk Island, as dealt with by the Commonwealth Police Act 1957-1973. These had previously been under the administration of the Attorney-General's Department (CA 5).
The change was associated with the Federal Government's intention to amalgamate the police forces under Australian Government control into one body, called the 'Australia Police', which also came into existence on 27 March 1975. However, the legislation required to establish the Australia Police as a statutory body had not been passed when the force and the Department were created.
Functions of the Department were:
Police forces of the Northern Territory of Australia, the Australian
Capital Territory and Norfolk Island
Duties of Customs and Excise Bounties on the production or export
of goods.
