Mawson Station was established on 13 February 1954 by the Australian National Research Expeditions (ANARE), and was the first permanent Australian station to be set up on the Antarctic continent.
Agency Components
The Geophysical Observatory at Mawson operated by the Bureau of Mineral Resources, commenced operations in July 1955.
The main functions of the observatory are:
- the collection and distribution of basic data in the disciplines of geomagnetism and seismology.
- the application of the data to investigations of local and regional phenomena.
The primary products of the observatory are analogue recordings of: - changes in the geomagnetic field (Magnetograms)
- earthquake waves (seismograms).
