Casey Station, which was established and became operational in February 1969, was named after Baron Casey, in recognition of his long association (as minister responsible) with Australia's Antarctic effort (1). The station was located about 2 km south of the Wilkes site to take advantage of previous and continuing scientific observations. The change of location was apparently made to overcome snow drift accumulation problems (2).
The Station provides meteorological and general scientific information and conducts geological and cartographic surveys, meteorological and biological studies and geophysical research.
The geophysical observatory staffed by the Bureau of Mineral Resources (CA 218) was established in 1970.
