This series consists of personnel dossiers maintained by the agency for ex-service personnel who were allocated service numbers after the re-organisation of numbering in 1947.
Papers are kept in brown envelopes marked with the number and name of the ex-service member.
The numbering system consists of a numerical prefix, indicating the State or territory of enlistment, followed by a consecutive number.
The prefixes were initially separated by an oblique stroke from the consecutive number, but this practice has been discontinued.
The following prefixes have been used: Queensland : 1 Western Australia : 5 New South Wales : 2 Tasmania : 6 Victoria : 3 Northern Territory : 7 South Australia : 4 Papua New Guinea : 8
The system was introduced in 1947. This series includes National Servicemen conscripted under the scheme operating from the mid 1960's until the early 1970's, although the numbering system used for the national servicemen differed in that the second number was also classified. (The prefix, followed by the number 7 and a six digit number indicates a national service number). Numbers prefixed by the letter "F" indicate a female enlistee.
The dossiers currently are created at the time of discharge by amalgamating discharge papers, the current dossier (CRS B2459), the unit personnel file and the promotions/posting file.
They contain documents covering such areas: awards, badges, conduct, compensation, death, discharge, enlistment, injury, medals, posting and movement, promotion, trade and training. In addition the dossier contains copies of correspondence between the ex-service person or relatives and CARO after the discharge.
