Function and
Provenance
This series is intended to be similar to AWM25, Written
records, 1914-18 War and AWM54, Written records, 1939-45 War, i.e. a collection
of miscellaneous records of varying provenance relating to Australia's
involvement in Southeast Asian conflicts.
Items received in the accession OW84/5, `D' series were
incorporated into the series in July 1993.
Other records include miscellaneous records that are not part of any other
proper recordkeeping system or series of files.
Content
The scope of this series is inclusive of all conflicts in
which Australia has been involved, and related Defence or military matters
between 1948 and 1975. These conflicts
include the Malayan Emergency, Indonesian Confrontation (Malaysia and Borneo),
Far East Strategic Reserve, ANZUK, and the Vietnam War.
Related topics such as Papua New Guinea, Cyclone Tracy and
Defence planning, administration and training are also present in the series.
Unlike the far larger miscellaneous series for the World
Wars, AWM125 is not built upon a large comprehensive range of records, compiled
systematically by the military. Rather,
it is comprised of individual or small groups of records that make their way into
the Memorial’s custody by more haphazard means. Therefore this series is likely to always be quite random and
patchy in its coverage of the topic of Australian involvement in Southeast
Asian conflicts, 1948-1975.
