The files and records in this series were included in a
collection of material associated with the office of the Scientific Adviser,
Army relating to Army wargaming and operational analysis. The Scientific
Advisor, Army is currently responsible for providing scientific and
technological advice to the Chief of Army and Army staff. Responsibilities
include the initiation of proposals for research and development and
undertaking analytical studies where appropriate.
The Scientific Adviser was forwarded the files containing
After Action Reports and Operational analysis conducted in Vietnam from 1966 to
1971. Also deposited with the Army research section were the files from the
Field Operations Research Section Headquarters of the Australian Force Vietnam,
comprising equipment evaluations and operational experience. The rest of the
accumulated analysis files and reports relate to Vietnam but the items
transferred also included two terrain studies of Malaya.
The series comprises Vietnam files and records from the
Scientific Advisers office of the Operational Research Section, Army. The files
were recovered from Anzac Park West in 1996, declassified and deposited with
the Army Battle Simulation Group (ABSG). ABSG, now the Combined Arms Training
and Doctrine Centre (CATDC) relocated to Puckapunyal in 1998 and the records
contained in two large boxes were transferred to the Australian War Memorial on
31 May 1999.
The series was developed around the Operational Reports
which form the bulk of the records and are historically more significant. Each
Operational Report provides a comprehensive summary including the organization and
participating units, sub unit operational analysis, after action reports or a
summary of contacts, incidents and VC installations. Many reports are
accompanied by maps of combat areas and company routes, as well as sketches of
actions and topography.

period from June 1966 to November 1971.
Files 723/R5/34 to 723/R5/124 cover other operations during
the period from February 1967 to July 1971.
