Register of File Movements, 21 May 1921 -
Function and purpose
The Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) was established in 1921 and series A9300 was created by the RAAF in the same year. A9300 records the service history of RAAF officers; including documents relating to the officer’s separation from the RAAF. Files are arranged alphabetically by surname and include: personal details (date of birth, marital status, next of kin, etc); previous trades and qualifications; rank, appointments and postings; courses of instruction; awards (decorations, medals, mentions and badges); movements, transfers and attachments; and, promotions, classifications, reductions and reversions. Some files contain documents relating to contact between the holding office and RAAF officers (and/or an officer's descendants or other interested parties) after the officer left the service. The series was discontinued in 1959 after the creation of series A703 ‘Correspondence files multiple number (Canberra) series’. In 1993, when the series was transferred into archival custody, the records were held by the Discharged Personnel Records Office of the Assistant Chief of Air Staff - Personnel (ACPERS-AF).
Prior to transfer into archival custody, the Department of Defence amalgamated some records from series A9301 (RAAF Personnel of Non-Commissioned Officers (NCO) and other ranks, 1921-1948) into series A9300. This was the agency’s standard administrative practice in cases where enlisted personnel were promoted to the rank of officer. The person’s earlier service history (enlisted personnel file) was added to the file created for them when they became an officer.

Files relating to policy issues were incorporated into series A703 ‘Correspondence files, multiple number series with occasional alphabetical prefixes and infixes [Canberra]’ in 1959.
The files of enlisted personnel (airmen) are held in series A9301 ‘RAAF Personnel of Non-Commissioned Officers (NCO) and other ranks, 1921-1948’. Some files from A9301 have been amalgamated with files in A9300. When enlisted personnel were promoted to the rank of officer, it became the agency’s administrative practice to add a person’s earlier service history (enlisted personnel file) into the file created when they became an officer.
Personnel files of officers who were still serving in the RAAF in 1959 were top-numbered into series A12372 ‘RAAF Personnel files - All Ranks’.
