Historical personalities - Historical events - The first crossing of the Pacific Ocean by aircraft was made in 1928 by Sir Charles Kingsford Smith, accompanied by Charles Ulm, Harry Lyon, and John Warner, in the three engined Fokker monoplane Southern Cross, known to the aviators as 'the Old Bus' - They left Burbank, California, on 31 May and arrived at Brisbane, Queensland, on 8 June, after a flight lasting 83 hours and 11 minutes - 'Smithy' was later knighted - The 'Old Bus' is preserved at Brisbane airport - The aviators with the aircraft at Brisbane on their arrival left to right Captain H Lyon (Maine) navigator, Charles Ulm (Sydney) co-pilot, Charles Kingsford Smith (Sydney) pilot and organiser of the expedition, John Warner (Kansas) radio operator CATEGORY: photograph FORMAT: b&w negative TYPE: cellulose acetate STATUS: preservation material |
