Summary heading
B6689 - Great Barrier Reef Listings of ASO / AUSLIG Projects
Photography series
Function and purpose
This series contains a listing which contains details of
films created by the Australian Surveying and Land Information Group (AUSLIG) and
its previous incarnations: the Australian Survey Office (ASO); The Lands and
Survey Branch of the Department of Interior; and the National Mapping Section.
These films were created for purposes including land surveying, cartography,
geodesy (the study of gravitational fields), photogrammetry
(the practice of determining the geometric properties of objects from
photographic images) and other earth science research and land information
management for Commonwealth departments and statutory authorities.
In September 2001 AUSLIG merged with Geoscience Australia to become the National Mapping
Division (NMD) within Geoscience Australia. In November 2001 the
current name of Geosience Australia
was adopted. The National Mapping Division and Geohazards
Divisions were merged in 2005 to become the Geospatial and Earth Monitoring
Division (GEMD).
The series is an arch lever binder used to control records
relating specifically to ASO / AUSLIG project photography of the Great
Barrier Reef. The films recorded in this listing
date from 1960 to 1992. However the list appears to have been collated between
1990 and 1992. There are two computer printouts from the AUSLIG aerial film
photography register. These listings contain entries relating to films directly
relating to the imaging of the Great Barrier Reef.
The films listed in the printouts have ‘SO’, ‘AUS’, ‘CA’ and ‘Q’ prefixes (the
‘Q’ prefix apparently relates to record that were created for AUSLIG
stakeholders external to the Commonwealth government). In between the two
computer printouts is a separate listing held in protective plastic sleeves
which almost exclusively relate to ‘AUS’ prefixed project photography prepared
via a contract with the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority during 1991
and 1992.

about 2 cm worth if documents. The first section of the item is a dot-matrix

System of arrangement and control
Single item series, with control symbol [1] imposed by National Archives of
Australia.
Relationships with other records
This series can be used in conjunction with the Aerial
survey flight line diagrams (B6676) to act as finding aids for B6673 - Negative
films of aerial survey photography of Australia, single number with 'AUS'
prefix; and B6674 and B6675, both of which series have items with ‘AUS’ suffixes.
Also this series can act as finding aid for B6670, B6674 and B6675 as these
series contain control symbols with ‘CA’ (CAB, CAC etc) prefixes, infixes or
suffixes.
There is also a small amount of duplication of control of
records with series B6687 and B6688.
