This series consists of a mixture of cards and booklets on which was registered inwards correspondence for CRS B2947, Correspondence files, multiple number series with "W" War prefix, 1939-1950. It appears that booklets were used for files, where a large number of inwards papers werereceived whereas cards were used for smaller files.
In addition sometimes papers for a particular file were recorded initially on a card or cards, continuing to a booklet as it became clear that a greater quantity of papers was involved, and sometimes finally, after the booklet had been filled on to a further card or cards. Booklets and cards for each file were numbered in sequence "Book 1", "Book 2", etc. whetherin card or booklet form.
Cards are blue with ruling and column headings printed inblack. Booklets are covered with pale grey cloth, with the file number and title written in ink on the front underlined in red. Column headings are identical for cards and booklets : "Date", "Number" (i.e. file number), "Other Office", "From Whom Received", "Nature of
Communication", "Reference" and "Remarks". Columns in the booklets cover the double page format, whereas those on the cards cover one card horizontally, and hence the latter's columns are narrower. Some cards are continuations to booklets held in CRS B2948, Registration booklets for correspondence files, multiple number series with "W" War prefix, 1934-1949. In these cases, the previous booklets have been marked "Separate Card", or "See Separate Card", and the entries apparently transcribed at one time onto the new card. This was probably done during 1939 and 1940 since the last entries in those booklets are during that period. Entries in the booklets for files where separate cards were not indicated continue to 19 July 1949, and no cards or booklets exist for thosefiles in CRS B2949.
The series is considered to commence on 19 September 1939, the date of the first entry found to be independent of the previous series (noted on the Card for W.19). The last entry noted was made on 6 June 1950 in booklet for W.18 and hence this is provisionally regarded as the conclusionof the series.
There are some cross references on the cards and in the booklets to CRS B3030, Correspondence files, annual single number series with "G" General prefix, 1901-1952, and to CRS B3027, Correspondence files, annual single number ("PB" or "Officers") series, 1938-1947.
