FUNCTION AND CONTENT This series contains a vast range of files relating to the activities of all divisions of the Department from 1953 onwards.
The files deal with subjects ranging from industrial awards, disputes, industrial committees and reports on various trades and industries, food services, arbitration; administrative activities; staffing and organisational matters; policies and procedures; surveys and proposals; financial matters and accounting; immigration; migrant accommodation and employment; labour research, tabulation of statistics, planning; international labour relations, (including the United Nations, International Labour Organisation, and Colombo Plan activities); the Commonwealth Employment Service and training schemes; technical matters; National Service and the re-establishment of ex-servicemen; the publication of various booklets and guides, etc.
USING THE SERIES System of Arrangement and Control On many of the earlier files in the series there is evidence of top numbering from previous multiple number series.
The 'H' prefix appears to apply to records that were created during the period 1 May 1982 to 24 Jul 1987 by the Department of Employment and Industrial Relations (CA 4148). The meaning of the 'H' prefix is unknown.
SERIES HISTORY In 1975 some records in this series were passed to the Australian Development Assistance Agency.
Consequently, due to an administrative change in 1977 these records are now controlled and held by the Australian International Development Assistance Bureau. CRS B146/84 Related series unregistered
