Series note
On 9 August 1971 the Pictorial Library changed the method of
classification of its colour transparencies from a single number to a daily single number system but still retaining the 'K' prefix denoting colour transparency. The change was initiated because the single number system had become too cumbersome and the new system was able to incorporate the age of the transparency. The daily single number incorporates the day, month, year and a single number which starts from one each day. Because of the change in the system of arrangement and control, these transparencies have been registered as a separate series which is a subsequent series to CRS A1500.

The transparencies are of three sizes: 13x10cm; 5.5x5.5cm and 3.5x3.5cm, although there is much variation within the range of these dimensions. Originally, they were mounted on cardboard mounts, and occasionally between glass. At present they are covered in
protective plastic sleeves.

On these protective plastic sleeves are three labels:
1. primary heading and control number
2. specific title of the transparency
3. secondary heading

The primary and secondary headings on the transparencies are entries in the subject index which facilitate retrieval. The transparencies cover a wide range of subjects and assignments on the political, economic and social life of all states of Australia, for example, agricultural shows, geographical sights, educational institutions and migrants activities.

The Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade anounced on the 15 November 1987 that Promotion Australia had been re-named the
Australian Overseas Information Service. This was appropriate because of the re-arrangement of government functions in July 1987.

The Public Affairs Branch of the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade assumed control of this series following the abolition of CA 6785, Australian Overseas Information Service on 7 March 1994.

The Public Affairs Branch was abolished in September 1996 and the responsibility f for the series now falls the the Central Office of the Department.

The Pictorial Library had in its possession seven cabinets of transparencies which were transferred to the Australian Archives in its entirety, including the cabinets. To find a colour slide contained in the cabinets you must first consult the subject index (a copy of which is held with the cabinets), go to the relevant drawer and call up the corresponding number against the secondary heading; the required slide will 'pop up' from the drawer of the cabinet.
