Series note |
This series consists of bound volumes of information relating to incoming correspondence to the Treasury. The first nine volumes have the title "Commonwealth Treasury - Register of Letters Inwards" and a year and a volume number printed onto them. From Volume 10 onwards the title changed to "Correspondence Register" with the exception of Volumes 18 and 21. Volume 18 deals with Members of Parliament only and the title of Volume 21 is "Old Age Pension".
Inside most volumes the entries have been arranged under headings. The headings have been attached to the right hand side of the pages to look like a tab index. The headings vary slightly from year to year. They consist of State Office names, Department/Authority names, subjects and a general A to Z breakup (see Inventory for actual names). The headings are not always in alphabetical order. From 1904 onwards there is an alphabetical tab index at the end of each volume [in addition to the tab index headings] with the exception of Volumes 19a and 20a. Entries in the alpha tab index consist of subjects/name and a file register number. In most volumes the alpha tab index has an Index to Headings preceding it. It is not possible to trace entries back from the tab index into the main part of the volumes where the entries have been arranged chronologically under a heading. But in volumes where the entries have been arranged numerically it is possible to trace the entries back from the alpha tab index to the main part of the volume.
Each volume has been numbered as has each page in the volumes. Although, in the alpha tab index the numbering starts at 1 at the "A" breakup.
The pages are divided into columns as follows:
Registry Number
Attached papers to No, Page, Book
When received
Date of letter
Number of letter
From whom received
Referred to Whom & When & When Returned
Nature of Communication
Remarks
The Registry numbers come from the numerical registers in CRS A573, [Numerical Indexes to Registers, Single Number Series, 1901-1918].
The volumes originally came to Australian Archives in 1952 as CP 134/2. This accession was converted to the CRS system in 1970.
The volumes were rebound in c.1960-61.
CRS A572 and CRS A573 were microfilmed concurrently with portions of each series on each roll in c.1971.Quantity in agency custody7.75 m (69 volumes) plus 2.6 m (microfilm copies of CRS A572 and CRS A573) held by CA 3196, Australian Archvies, ACT Regional Office |
