The files deal with subjects relating to the Northern Territory, including mining, pastoral leases, agriculture, aboriginal affairs, immigration, exploration, railways, security and criminal matters, and the administration of Port Darwin.
The series covers the administration of Dr. John A. Gilruth from 1912 - 1919 and the Darwin riots of 1918 - 1919. Included too are maps, photographs and travellers' accounts of the early Territory.
This series has been microfilmed and reference copies are now available for public use in the Australian Archives' Search Rooms in the Northern Territory and the ACT.
A reference set of photographs from the series is also available in both of these offices.Consignment 4 of this series contains records relating to the transfer of the Port Augusta to Oodnadatta Railway from the Government of South Australian to the Commonwealth Government.
In 2017, the microfilm was digitized and uploaded to National Archives database RecordSearch. The digital copy can be viewed by clicking on the digital image icon attached to the A3 items on RecordSearch.

The audit on microfilms were carried out and A3/7 microfilms were selected for destruction by Detlev Lueth in July 2018.
The reference copy consignment has been destroyed on 16/7/2018.
