Keith Alexander Laught was born on 2nd January 1907, in Mitcham, South Australia. He was educated at Scotch College, Adelaide. He enrolled at University of Adelaide and graduated with a Bachelor of Laws (LLB).
Keith Laught served at the South Australian Bar 1928, practised law Adelaide 1929, Clare 1929-1938 and was a solicitor in Mt Gambier 1938-1959. During World War II Laught enlisted in the 2nd Australian Imperial Force, 6th July, 1940. He served in Syria and Egypt, including El Alamein, with the 9th Divisional Cavalry Regiment.
Keith Laught was elected to the Senate for South Australia at the
general election in 1951; the Senate election in 1953; the general election in 1958; and, the Senate election in 1964.
He served on the Senate Standing Committee on Regulations and Ordinances from 23rd February 1956 to 15th August 1962. He was a member of the Australian delegation to the 47th Conference of the Inter-Parliamentary Union in Rio de Janeiro in 1958. He was a member of the council of the Australian National University from 1st July 1959 to the time of his death and represented the Senate of the Parliament in that capacity.
Senator Laught was a member of the Committee of Disputed Returns and Qualifications from 9th August 1962 to 26th August 1965. He served as a member of the Joint Parliamentary Committee on Foreign Affairs from 16th August 1962 and was a member of the parliamentary delegation to South-East Asia in June-July 1963. Senator Laught had been a Temporary Chairman of Committees from 11th August 1964. He was a Chairman of the Senate Select Committee on the Metric System of Weights and Measures from 12th July 1967 and tabled the report of that Committee in the Senate on 29th May 1968.
Senator Laught had a distinguished record of parliamentary service. He was a strong supporter and advocate of the future progress and development of South Australia.
