John Martin Hyde was born on 2 February 1936, and was educated at Hale School in Perth. He left school when he was 16 to return to his father's wheat and sheep farm at Dalwallinu. He continued farming for 17 years. While a farmer, Hyde joined the Liberal Party and was a member of Liberal Party State Executive, Western Australia Division from 1969 to 1971, and also 1973. At the same time he was also President of the Liberal Party for the Moore Division.
Hyde was a Councillor on the Dalwallinu Shire Council from 1966 to 1971, serving as Deputy President for two years.
In 1972 he stood for the federal seat of Moore but lost to a Country Party candidate. In the general election of 1974, Hyde was asked to stand again, and this time won the seat of Moore for the Liberal Party. Since entering Parliament, Hyde served on several committees and attended various overseas conferences and functions.
In the federal election of 1983, Hyde lost the seat of Moore to Cecil Blanchard of the Australian Labor Party.
