Career within Commonwealth

Charles Wilson Tuckey was born on 10 July 1935 in Perth, Western Australia. He was educated at Perth Modern School and was a businessman and hotelier before entering politics as a member of the Liberal Party.

Tuckey began in local government service as a Town Councillor in Carnarvon in 1964, then as Mayor 1964-65, and became Shire President 1965-69 when Carnarvon’s status changed from town to Shire in February 1965. He was Deputy President for the periods 1970-71, 1973-77 and 1979-80 and Councillor for 1969-70, 1971-73 and 1977-79.

Tuckey was elected to the House of Representatives as the Member for O’Connor, WA in 1980, 1983, 1984, 1987, 1990, 1993, 1996, 1998, 2001, 2004 and 2007. At the Federal Election on 21 August 2010, Tuckey lost the seat of O’Connor to the National Party candidate, Tony Crook.

In federal Parliament he was appointed as a member of the Opposition Shadow Ministry as Shadow Minister for Small Business and Administrative Services from 14 December 1984 to 1 May 1987; for Housing and Small Business from 1 May 1987 to 14 August 1987 and from 12 May 1989 to 28 October 1989; for Health from 14 August 1987 to 16 September 1988; for Employment and Training from 16 September 1988 to 12 May 1989; for Small Business from 7 April 1993 to 26 May 1994; for Veterans’ Affairs and Defence Science and Personnel from 26 May 1994 to 11 March 1996. He held the position of Deputy Manager of Opposition Business in the House from 16 September 1988 to 12 May 1989 and from 7 April 1993 to 26 May 1994.

Tuckey has contributed to the work of various House of Representatives and Joint Standing and Statutory Parliamentary Committees and was a member of Parliamentary Delegations to the USA and Venezuela in July 1997 and Belgium, the Netherlands and Norway in April-May 2006.

During the Howard government he held Ministerial positions as Minister for Forestry and Conservation and Minister Assisting the Prime Minister from 21 October 1998 to 26 November 2001 and then as Minister for Regional Services, Territories and Local Government from 25 January 2002 to 07 October 2003.
