Item Descriptive Note

Descriptive note

During consultation with Preservation staff, it was decided that BOX 4, item barcode 12185164 in series CP567/1/1 would need to be split into three parts.  The first part consists of the original volume less the loose photographs and press cuttings that now comprise the second and third parts. For the time being the three parts will be known as:

-          BOX  4 PART A: [Press cuttings and photographs relating to the Spanish influenza pandemic of 1918-1920, quarantine issues, and other health-related matters - compiled by Dr Cumpston]

-          BOX 4 PART B: [Press cuttings and photographs relating to the Spanish influenza pandemic of 1918-1920, quarantine issues, and other health-related matters - compiled by Dr Cumpston - 86 items removed from original volume]

-          BOX 4 PART C: [Press cuttings and photographs relating to the Spanish influenza pandemic of 1918-1920, quarantine issues, and other health-related matters - compiled by Dr Cumpston - 44 items removed from original volume]

The decision to use alphabetical parts reflects the fact that each item contains original material and that the three parts should be considered as one item that has been split solely for preservation reasons.

The removed newspaper cuttings have been photocopied and arranged with the original first and followed by the photocopies. Often, more than one cutting in BOX 4 PART B and BOX 4 PART C appears on single sheets, depending on their size. The ‘sections ‘ indicated as being described in BOX 4 PART A are not described in the item title, rather, the term ‘sections’ has been used by Preservation staff to explain the location within the original file from which the material has been moved to BOX 4 PART B and BOX 4 PART C.

The removed portions that are described in BOX 4 PART A as Sections 1 to 7 are found in BOX 4 PART B:

-          Inside front cover        Section 1          40 newspaper cuttings, 20 black and white postcards [27a – 27t] of  Stevedore Quarantine Accommodation and 1 envelope
