The Land Resources Laboratories refers to the Division of Land Resources Management(Chief Mr. R.A. Perry), Division of Land Use Research (Chief Dr. R.J Millington) and Division of Soils(Chief Dr. A.E. Martin) and was formed to enable collaboration between the three divisions and external bodies on matters relevant to the research programmes of the Laboratories.
Dr. E.G. Hallsworth was appointed as Chairman of the Committee of Chiefs of the three divisions (known as the Land Resources Laboratories Committee) on its establishment.
Each of the three divisions maintained its own chief. The chairman had no authority to make decisions, but held a purely liaison role with the chiefs of the three divisions. Terms of reference state that the aim was: Integration of Land Research activities and the development of closer collaboration with bodies ouside CSIRO on relevant research matters. The position of chairman reported directly to the executive on common operations and programmes of research.
The formation of the Land Resources Laboratories was declared to staff in CSIRO Information Circular 3rd October 1973.
Dr. E.G. Hallsworth vacated the position of Chief, Division of Soils to take up this new position.
