From 10 October 1994 the former Senate Legislative and General Purpose Standing Committees were restructured so that a pair of standing committees - a References Committee and a Legislation Committee - were established in each of eight subject areas, including economics.

Each pair of committees has overlapping membership and a joint secretariat, although records for each committee are maintained and managed separately.  The Legislation Committees examine legislation referred to them by the Senate, monitor the performance of government departments and agencies, and scrutinise their annual reports.  They also take over the role of the former Senate estimates committees.

The Senate Legislation Committee on Economics may examine issues relating to the portfolios of Industrial Relations, Industry, Science and Tourism and Treasury.
