Abolition
The CSIRO Division of Marine Research was abolished on
30 June 2005. Its successor is CSIRO Marine and Atmospheric Research (CMAR), a
merger of CSIRO Marine Research and CSIRO Atmospheric Research.
Creation
The CSIRO Division of Marine Research was created in
1997 with the combination of the previous CSIRO Divisions of Fisheries and
Oceanography.
Functions and activities
The research structure of the agency was divided into
five programs with two support programs. The research programs were titled
‘Aquaculture and Biotechnology’, ‘Oceans and Climate’, ‘Maritime Industries and
Environment’, ‘Tropical and Pelagic Ecosystems’, and ‘Multiple Use Management
of Economic Exclusion Zone’. The research support programs were titled
‘Resource Management and Communications’ and ‘Commercial Management’. The first
Chief of the Division was Dr Chris Fandry.
