Australia entered into formal diplomatic relations with Barbados through non-resident accreditation by the High Commissioner resident in Canada (CA 1816) from 1 July 1974 and from 4 March 1978 by the Australian High Commissioner resident in Jamaica (CA 6856).
The first High Commissioner resident in Barbados was accredited on 9 February 1994. In addition to his responsibilities in Barbados the High Commissioner has also had non-resident accreditation for: Guyana, Jamaica; Trinidad and Tobago; Grenada, Bahamas; St Lucia, Dominica; St Vincent and the Grenadines; St Kitts-Nevis, Belize; and Antigua and Barbuda.
The Embassy functions include visiting, reporting and consular responsibilities for: Anguilla (UK), Montserrat (UK), Cayman Islands (UK), British Virgin Islands (UK), Turks and Caicos Islands (UK), Suriname, French Guiana (Fr), Guadeloupe (Fr), Martinique (Fr), Dominican Republic, Haiti and Port of Spain (for which Kingston has supervisory responsibility).
