Functions and
activities
An Australian
embassy is headed by an Ambassador and is the highest
form of diplomatic mission. An embassy's
broad function is to represent to the country to which it is accredited the
interests of the Commonwealth of Australia.
This involves a variety of tasks including:
* negotiating
with governments on issues of concern to Australia;
* disseminating
information that accurately represents Australia and its policies;
* assisting Australian
citizens residing in or visiting the country to which the embassy is
accredited;
* observing and
reporting on events and developments in the country of the embassy; and
*
promoting and facilitating trade relations.
The establishment
of the Embassy was intended to enhance the good relations
which existed between Australia and Nepal and to enable the Government
to provide effective consular service for the growing number of Australian
visitors to Nepal. It would also facilitate more effective
administration of Australia's $2.6 million aid program to Nepal.
In April 2001,
the agencies and departments represented at the post included the Department of
Foreign Affairs and Trade (CA 5987) and AusAID (CA
6679). The post has residential
accreditation in Nepal.
