The Australian Development Assistance Bureau (CA 2451), which replaced the Australian Development Assistance Agency (CA 1580), was formally set up within the (former) Department of Foreign Affairs (CA 1382) on 1 July 1977, following the proclamation of the Australian Development Assistance Agency (Repeal) Act 1977 on that day (Australian Government Gazette, No. S119, 30 June 1977, p.2). The Regional Offices of the Bureau (including the ACT Administration (CA 7583))are concerned chiefly with the administration of training programs in Australia for students from developing countries(Commonwealth Government Directory, 1981, p.189). Since 1982, Regional Offices have been known as State Administrations. On 14 August 1987 the Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade, the Hon Bill Hayden, announced in News Release No. M102 that as of 17 August 1987 the Australian Development Assistance Bureau (ADAB) would be known as the Australian International Development Assistance Bureau (AIDAB). The minor alteration of the title better reflects the nature of the Bureau's work, which is responsible for the management of Australia's overseas aid program.
