On 13 May 1993 the Senate Standing Committee on Industry, Science and Technology (CA 8502) merged with the Senate Standing Committee on Transport, Communications and Infrastructure (CA 6707), to become the Senate Standing Committee on Industry, Science, Technology, Transport, Communications and Infrastructure.

On 10 October 1994 the Committee was restructured to become the Senate References Committee on Economics and the Senate Legislation Committee on Economics.  The transport function went to the Senate References Committee on Rural and Regional Affairs and Transport (CA 8680) and the Senate Legislation Committee on Rural and Regional Affairs and Transport (CA 8681).  The communications function went to the Senate References Committee on Environment, Recreation, Communications and the Arts (CA 8357) and the Senate Legislation Committee on Environment, Recreation, Communications and the Arts (CA 8676).
