Built at a cost of $2.1 million and opened in 1977 the CSIRO Marine Laboratories at Cleveland have two main avenues of research.
The first concentrates on ecological studies in the field on the life history of prawns and the second investigates when prawns eat, how much food is utilised and what controls growth of prawns.
The Laboratories are utilised as a base for field studies in the Gulf of Carpentaria and also maintain a field station at Karumba in North Queensland.
The Laboratories have a total staff of 21 which includes 13
scientists.
